Why a Fox?
You may be wondering why a football club in West Yorkshire, with no apparent wildlife connections, has a fox as a mascot. Well, back in the mid 1990s, a fox was often seen hanging around The Shay stadium and was blamed for the regular appearance of strange holes on the club's pitch. This was put down to the fact that the fox would collect discarded pies from the terraces and bury them beneath the turf.
The Commercial Manager at the time, Andrew Pinfield, came up with the idea of adopting the fox as the club mascot and set local school children the task of picking a name for the new arrival. The most popular choice by far was Freddy and so Freddy the Fox, Halifax Town mascot, was born!
Freddy's first appearance was at a home game in the GM Vauxhall
Conference against Altrincham on the 16th of March 1996. The game ended
in 1-1 draw. Not many of the 755-strong crowd on that day would have
expected Freddy to still be around after eleven years. But, after two
re-incarnations, Freddy MK3 is still going strong!
