Freddy in Glorious Goodwood Scramble!

Freddy came within a whisker of winning a mascot race for the first time ever at Goodwood Racecourse over the August Bank Holiday weekend. This year was the second year that Goodwood had held the Great British Mascot Egg And Spoon Race which was won last year by Wasps' Rugby Union mascot, Sting the Wasp. Freddy had managed a respectable third place so was hoping to do pretty well again this time round.

The twelve runners included Crystal Palace's Pete and Alice the Eagles as well as Yeovil Town's Jolly Green Giant. In warm sunshine with the going Good to Soft the mascots were under Starter's Orders and were off down the final furlong. Chester the Bear from Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice set the early pace and soon opened up a considerable lead. Freddy was in second place and beginning to open up a gap on the rest of the pack. It all looked to be over, however, as Chester was almost at the winning post. Then, within a yard of the tape, a gust of wind caught Chester's egg and blew it off his spoon. As he frantically searched for the egg in the long grass Freddy came storming up behind and looked certain to snatch a dramatic victory but it wasn't over yet. The same gust of wind blew Freddy's egg into the grass and both mascots ended up scrabbling around just feet from the winning line looking for their eggs. Both mascots found their eggs at the same time but Freddy took a fraction of a second longer to put his egg back on his spoon and Chester won by a whisker!
