Friends again! Freddy and Rochdale's Desmond the Dragon make up at the British Mascot Grand National in 2000. Freddy and Desmond hadn't seen eye to eye in September 1999 when Halifax Town met Rochdale at Spotland Stadium. What began as friendly banter during half time turned into something quite ugly! As Freddy and Desmond walked in front of the Rochdale supporters, Desmond started some playful pushing and Freddy responded by cocking his leg up on the goalpost. Desmond didn't see the funny side and punched Freddy on the snout! Freddy responded  with some colourful language and gestures leaving Desmond backing off with his tail between his legs! ITV cameras recorded the scrap and the incident was reported on GMTV the next morning as well as in the press, ranging from the Daily Telegraph to the Daily Sport. The footage was later shown as part of ITV's When Athletes Attack series and has also been shown across America and Australia. To this day, Freddy is still banned from Rochdale's Spotland Stadium!

Freddy meets comedian and Coronation Street star, Bradley Walsh at The London Studios in June 2001. Freddy was in London to appear on a live broadcast on ITV1 of Ant & Dec's Saturday tea-time show, Slap Bang! The programme was a fore-runner to Ant & Dec's current programme, Saturday Night Takeaway and of a similar format. Also appearing on the same show was actresses, Claire Goose, Anita Dobson and Lisa Faulkner along with former star of The Bill and Coronation Street, actor Stephen Beckett who plays Dr Matt Ramsden. Oh, yes and a certain Robbie Williams was also there to perform his latest song!

Freddy the Fox meets Freddie the Fox! Perhaps the most scandalous event in mascot history took place in September 2001 when Freddie the Fox won the British Mascot Grand National at Huntingdon racecourse. Freddie was apparently running for the Countryside Appreciation Group and won the race by a country mile. Judges were suspicious especially when Freddie left the racecourse without removing his mask. Further investigations revealed Freddie to be Olympic hurdler, Matthew Douglas in disguise. As the rules of the race clearly state that professional athletes are not permitted to take part, Freddie was stripped of his title and the race was awarded to Rushden & Diamonds mascot, Dazzler the Lion. Freddy was so annoyed that his name had been used in such a scandalous way that he refused to take part in the BMGN the following year. Even so, when people had heard that Freddie the Fox had won the Mascot Grand National he didn't rush to tell them that it was Freddie and not Freddy!

Freddy milking the occasion as usual. This was at the British Mascot Grand National, Huntingdon in September 2001. The cow had the last laugh as seconds later an arm appeared from the underside of the cow and nicked most of Freddy's sweets out of his bucket!

Freddy on the campaign trail with Hartlepool United mascot, H'Angus the Monkey. When H'Angus visited The Shay in April 2002 he was in the middle of an election campaign. The cheeky northern monkey was running for Mayor of Hartlepool and enlisted Freddy as his running mate  as he handed out leaflets around the ground. The tactics must have helped as H'Angus was duly elected as Mayor of Hartlepool. Although he promised free bananas for everyone his election didn't impress local MP, Peter Mandelson, who thought the electorate had taken leave of their senses and that H'Angus wasn't up to the job. Those who dismiss mascots do so at their peril. While Mandelson regularly slips up on political banana skins, H'Angus was re-elected in May 2005 with a 10,000 majority!

It's August 2002 and a new-look Freddy's at Collingham, near Lincoln, for a mascot football match. Mascots took part in a mascot football match prior to the annual game between Collingham FC and the Emmerdale All Stars XI. In the crowd was Shirley Stelfox who plays eternal misery guts, Edna Birch. As you can see Shirley is nothing like her Emmerdale character and happily had her photo taken with Freddy. Unfortunately this event has been dogged by controversy after allegations of drug abuse among some members of the Emmerdale team and the disappearance of Telford United mascot Benny Buck's head in 2004.
